SpaceOar

SpaceOar is an absorbable hydrogel that is inserted into the area in between the prostate and rectum. Once it is inserted, this creates a space that separates the prostate from the rectum. The space that is created from the hydrogel reduces the amount of radiation that comes in contact with the rectal wall. This reduces the risk of rectal radiation exposure.

During the hydrogel placement procedure, patients can be either awake or under mild sedation. This procedure is performed in the office and completes in typically 15-20 minutes. It is a minimally invasive procedure using local anesthesia that does not require an incision. The hydrogel is placed using a needle under ultrasound guidance and can last up to 6 months before being naturally absorbed. After the procedure, normal activities can be typically resumed the following day.
